Social media has a significant impact on many things, and believe it or not golf is one of them.
Many of us who already golf find our inspiration to play certain courses because of the photos we see while searching online or scrolling through Instagram. We follow certain golf accounts that offer us tips for our swings. The most exciting part about social media however is that it is an amazing tool we can use to help grow the game of golf.
Social Media shows us the fun side of the game and encourages other women who don’t golf to want to pick a club and give it a try. Women With Drive Founders Nikki B. and Tisha Alyn Abrea have been using social media as a tool to build their golf community of women, and currently have more than 160,000 followers online.
We sat down to hear how they’re using their platform to shift the ways millennilas think about golf:
I was caught with no reply when the Boys & Girls Club Director said “What would I suggest to motivate the girls of color to participate in golf? Followed by golf is just not cool or of origin for most of our girls here. As an LPGA pro and passionate for the game my idea is who needs motivation to try? Well it seems that the girls of color do need more drive than a desire to branch out try new, play and have fun while opening possible doors for a strong future through what golf gives in return. Character growth, college scholarships, friendships, a game for a life time and the game that levels the playing field to gender and color. Why has golfers of color not grown with women and juniors? I”m donating my time skills and golf course to hold the girls golf program and will keep the doors open for the participants to carry on. What more can I do? Please send along your insights. Thank you, Cathy Schmidt
