Have you noticed that the most challenging aspect of actually accomplishing our New Year’s resolutions isn’t finding the motivation to put in the work, but sticking with it beyond February?
Why is that? We set our resolutions with clear minds after reflecting on a year filled with memories, milestones, and lessons. Our intentions are pure, focused on prioritizing our health, organizing our lives, and creating more time to spend with the people who matter most. But come Spring, our busy lives get busier, and we fall out of our new routines and back into our old habits.
Sticking to our resolutions is a challenge because of how easy it is to get overwhelmed with sudden change and going “all in” with something new right away. People aren’t built for big changes, but setting small, actionable goals can build up over the year. Let’s take a new approach this year and avoid letting March 1st get the better of our goal keeping.
Whether your goal is to add ten yards to your driver or to shed ten pounds, breaking your big goals into smaller, time-based milestones throughout the year will help your lofty aspirations feel more attainable. Working towards those bite-sized goals will also help you maintain your motivation to persevere throughout the year.
Like any other exercise in goal-setting, write it down along with the reasons you’ve decided to put those changes at the forefront of your mind. Keep your goals posted on your nightstand or vanity mirror, somewhere you’ll see them daily. As you accomplish a milestone, celebrate! You worked hard to get to where you are, and those efforts should be rewarded.
We create New Year’s resolutions because we can more clearly see where we want to make changes and enhance our lives in the coming year. So, let’s make 2018 our year to stick to those plans and see our goals all the way through.
